Torque Wrench FAQ
Answers to common questions about using, storing, calibrating and servicing Torque Master torque wrenches, and about our warranty.
Using your torque wrench
What should I do before using a new torque wrench for the first time?
If the torque wrench is new, or has been in storage for some time, operate it several times at a low torque setting. This allows the internal lubrication to re-coat the working parts. See before first use.
How do I set the torque value?
On TM 10/10R to TM 300/300R, pull out the setting knob at the end of the grip, lock it at 90 degrees, turn it until the handle edge aligns with the required value, then push the knob back in. On TM 400/400R and above, turn the screw below the steel handle grip with the tommy bar supplied. Step-by-step instructions with photos are in the user guide.
Why should I set the torque by moving upwards through the range?
On TM 400/400R and above, the correct setting is obtained only by moving the handle upwards through the range. Setting the value by moving down through the range will not give the correct torque setting.
Why is the click softer at low torque settings?
The click is naturally quieter, and the break-away of the handle is very soft, at lower torque settings. Try the wrench on a non-critical fastener first so that you are familiar with the feel. When the set torque is reached, stop pulling.
Can I use a torque wrench to loosen bolts?
No. Do not use the torque wrench as a breaker bar or to loosen nuts, bolts or other fasteners. This will damage the mechanism and invalidate the warranty.
Can I use an extension with a torque wrench?
Do not use extensions or adapters that significantly alter the effective length of the wrench unless the proper torque calculations are made.
Which heads fit the TM i interchangeable head torque wrenches?
TM 10i to TM 250i have a 16 mm spigot that accepts ratchet heads with 3/8", 1/2" and 3/4" square drive, and open-end fittings from 8 mm to 32 mm A/F. Push the head onto the spigot until it clicks into place; press the release button to remove it. See the TM i specifications.
How do I convert a torque value to another unit?
Use our torque unit converter to convert between N·m, lbf·ft, kgf·m, lbf·in, kgf·cm and other units, and see which Torque Master models cover the value.
Storage & care
Why should I store my torque wrench at its lowest setting?
After use, always reset the torque wrench to its lowest setting for storage. Storing it at any other setting will affect its calibration. Do not turn the adjustment below the lowest setting.
How should I clean and store my torque wrench?
Wipe it clean with a soft, dry cloth; do not immerse it in any type of cleaner, as this will affect the internal lubrication. Lubricate the moving parts periodically with lubricating oil, and store the wrench in its protective case in a cool, dry place.
What comes in the box?
The torque wrench with its unique serial number, a protective carrying case (blow-moulded or steel, depending on the model), a calibration certificate, an instruction manual, and a tommy bar with models TM 400/400R and above.
Accuracy & calibration
How accurate are Torque Master torque wrenches?
±3% accuracy, better than the ±4% required by ISO 6789:2017. Every wrench is supplied with its own calibration certificate, and calibration is traceable through NABL-accredited reference equipment.
How often should a torque wrench be recalibrated?
The interval is set by the user, based on the required accuracy, frequency of use, typical load, and the operating and storage conditions. If you do not have a control procedure, use a default interval of 12 months or approximately 5,000 cycles, counted from the date of first use.
When must a torque wrench be recalibrated straight away?
After an overload greater than 125% of the maximum rated load, after any repair, and after any mishandling, such as a drop, that could affect its accuracy.
Does the calibration certificate expire when the warranty ends?
No. Calibration validity is independent of the product warranty period. The calibration interval starts from the date of first use, not from the factory calibration date, so a calibration certificate is not "expired" simply because the warranty period has ended.
Do you offer repair and recalibration?
Yes. A full repair and calibration service is available on request, at a charge. Please do not attempt to adjust or repair the torque wrench yourself. Contact us for service.
Warranty
How long is the warranty on Torque Master torque wrenches?
12 months from the date of purchase. If inspection shows that a fault is due to defective materials or workmanship, the repair is carried out free of charge. See the full warranty terms.
What do I need to make a warranty claim?
The original dated purchase invoice, as proof of purchase within the warranty period. The warranty is not effective without it.
What is not covered by the warranty?
Normal wear and tear, and any damage caused by misuse, careless or unsafe handling, alterations, accidents, or repairs attempted or made by anyone other than the authorised service department. If a repair falls outside the warranty, we will send a written quotation for the work required.
